Seattle Acupuncture- Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common complaint that comes through my office doors a few times each week. The shoulder is a vulnerable joint that is prone to being moved incorrectly and to getting injuries. Poor body posture and over active upper trapezius muscles are probably the most common cause of people’s shoulder pain. The biggest culprit that causes these two things to happen is sitting at a desk, hunched over in front of a computer all day long. This promotes the shoulders to curve in towards the chest, placing undo burden on the joint itself with stronger muscles being developed in the chest and upper traps verses a more balanced daily posture that incorporates lower, middle and upper traps along with surrounding muscles used around the joint itself. Over time, this will cause inflammation to develop in the shoulder joint leading to acute and chronic shoulder pain.

Acupuncture is great for relieving this sort of problem for many reasons. First, in my clinic, we do running cupping on any client who will allow it. This involves moving a glass cup, suctioned to the body, up and down the neck and back, loosening the muscles and fascia in all these areas. For people who tend to be very tight around their neck and upper traps, this causes instant relief and release of those muscles. Not only is this incredibly relaxing, it also helps these muscles to stop overworking. Second, acupuncture is incredibly effective at removing inflammation from the body. Placing acupuncture needles directly into the place of pain, surrounding areas and distal acupuncture points, is an effective way to remove inflammation from the shoulder therefore decreasing overall pain. Third, acupuncture is very good at removing stress from the body and soothing the nervous system. For people who hold stress in their neck and shoulders, this helps to protect them from that automatic reaction by helping them stay calm and grounded all day long. And last, acupuncture is a holistic medicine, meaning we think of the whole body, not just one part of it. We take into consideration how the shoulder pain is impacting the entire body and make sure those parts are corrected and healed as well.
